Motion Control for for Cardboard Boxes Tray-forming Machine
Jennings Development Intenational Ltd (JDI), a New
Zealand based company, manufactures a range of Tray-forming equipment
to assemble corrugated cardboard boxes using holt melt adhesive.
Tray-formers have been supplied to customers in New Zealand, USA,
South America, and Australia. CNC Design Ltd New Zealand and JDI
have been collaborating on a Siemens Masterdrive Solution to meet
the needs of the changing international market place for Tray-formers.
The machine uses a high performance folding and gluing process and
the entire machine is easily transportable between packing lines.
For this reason the control, operator panel and drive system were
required to fit into a compact cabinet mounted on the machine. The
Siemens C7 operator panel with integrated PLC fulfilled these requirement
admirably as it is mounted in the cabinet door with minimal space
requirement on the backplane of the cabinet for remote I/O.
A hight performance Masterdrive MC servodrive system was selected
along with FM352 cam control module. The cam controller enable glue
application precisely while the carton blang is travelling at high
speed.
The powerfull PROFIBUS network interface to the Masterdrive MC was
ideal for the complicated block change on the fly functions necessary
to achieve optimum production rates.

Siemens automation systems are totally integrated in the S7
software programming and configuration environment. This means
PLC, operator panel and servodrive are all programmed, configured
and commissioned using a single tool making life much easier
for commissioning and maintenance staff.
Remote on line connection via a telephone modem is used for
diagnostic purposes adn down loading the software upgrades.
