An Exhibition of Engineering Excellence
& Award Night (October 13, 2005)

Meridian05 is an exhibition celebrating the efforts and expertise of Mechanical Engineering & Mechatronics students at The University of Melbourne. It is a showcase of the intelligence and imagination of final year students in the application of their skills & knowledge to generate innovative solutions to real world projects.

CNC Design is proud to be involved as a major sponsor for the Mechatronics Department at Melbourne University and has been for a number of years. This year the graduates have conducted there first ever exhibition as part of their assignments for end of year results and were rewarded accordingly with a high attendance of delegates.

The Graduates were spilt into groups and the size of each group would be determined on the project selected. In our case we were to judge nine project groups for the Research and Innovation award. Hoe Chin Tay was the selected judge and he found it very difficult to select the project that was the most innovative, as they were all, to say the least, exceptionally high standards and quality of presentation, Hoe Chin also added that they all projected realistic applications for the future.

And the winner for Research and Innovation award is “Optimal Control of Hybrid Vehicles” by Gerald Tang & Kuan Waey LEE.

This project was to establish data fusion techniques about expected traffic control. Data Fusion techniques are used to build up knowledge about expected traffic flow. This expected traffic velocity profile can be used to improve fuel economy in conventional and Hybrid passenger vehicles. Refer to the detailed graphic results that the project engineers have concluded.

CNC Design presented the award in the presence of the Honourable Ian Macfarlane MP, Federal Minister for Industry, Tourism & Resources. The minister congratulated all the participants in the exhibition for there extremely innovative ideas and also congratulated the University on its commitment to technology research for our future generations. He also added that the sponsors are a testament to the future of our younger generation and commitment to Industry.
