High Torque Motor from Siemens

Siemens Automation and Drives present a new product called Torque Motor. This motor operates as a synchronous motor and features a stator, a rotor and permanent magnets. Siemens' torque motor features a very high torque of up to 7500 Newton-meters. Siemens Torque Motor is available as 1FW3 and 1FW6 product series.

In general, the torque is attained through a fixed stator which transmits the torque directly to the rotor via the air gap as is the case with a linear motor. This drive concept makes mechanical transmission elements unnecessary, averting any inaccuracies inherent to mechanical solutions. In addition, the torque motor is virtually wear- and maintenance-free.

Torque motors offer maximum precision and dynamics both for positioning and continuous-path control; in other words, the interpolation of several dynamic axes.

Torque motors are particularly suitable for machine tools with rotary tables or swiveling axes, for instance in high-speed cutting centers or profile milling with swiveling heads in large-scale machining centers. Furthermore, they can be used as drives for quick run-up axes on turning machines, for dynamic tool magazines in machining centers, in robotics and injection molding machines.

Siemens torque motors are available in two designs, as a compact motor with an external cooling jacket and as a precision motor. The precision motor achieves an exact temperature profile through an integrated high-performance cooler and an optional precision cooler. Heat separation keeps the affects of temperature to an absolute minimum at the machine interfaces – an important prerequisite for mechanical engineering applications. The motor can also be operated without cooling with a corresponding reduction in the constant torque.

Depending on the design, Siemens torque motors are available in various models, from a built-in motor with a rotor, stator and mounting tool, to a complete motor with pre-assembled rotor, stator and bearings. All torque motors have the same standard electrical connections. The compact version has an external cooling jacket for a precise temperature profile with the same proven integrated high-performance cooler and optional precision cooler used in linear motors.
