Design & Siemens SINUMERIK 840D provide solution for C5
System's innovative CNC Modelling Machine
With commissioning nearing successful completion, it is time
to show off what will be a new success story for another Australian
engineering design.
Mr Peter Heraud, Managing Director of C5 Systems, told me
that his reason for choosing the Siemens SINUMERIK 840D CNC
Control with Siemens Servo Drives and Motors, gave him a machine
that uses a globally recognized control, with a worldwide
network. This will allow him to sell this new machine into
all corners of the earth with the comfort of knowing there
will be local support. He also stated that his choice of using
CNC Design as an electrical engineering source has already
proven to be correct eliminating the many trying times normally
associated with initial machine commissioning.
The machine is a level above standard Clay Milling machines
and is capable of accurately machining a variety of soft materials
including Styrene foams and Ureols. The use of large cutters
with some materials can reduce, or even eliminate the need
for roughing. The machine will reduce total turnaround time
by using increased cutting speeds, larger cutters and most
importantly a greatly increased machining envelope that eliminates
multiple setups. With the introduction of 5 axis cutting,
it will be possible to machine a complete automobile exterior
with one setup and only one NC program per cutter.
The main unit runs on parallel low-profile (70 mm) plates
set 3.5m apart. Travel is 7m * 3m with vertical displacement
of 2.5m. A 3rd transfer plate with integrated turntable simplifies
the translation of the main unit to the opposing rail. The
main axis is driven by a unique Syncro rack drive (Patent
Pending) that is central to the transfer of the main unit
from rail to rail. (15/12/2003)
